Class Grocery Store

The kids had a great time last week practicing their money skills in our class grocery store! I set up several food items and attached prices. Then I split the kids into two groups. One group started as cashiers and the other group started as shoppers. The shoppers chose items from the class grocery store to "buy," and then they headed to a cashier who was responsible for making sure they were paid the correct amount of money. The kids then got the chance to switch roles.

Our class was very excited to welcome a Gahanna Lincoln basketball player to our classroom to read.

Olivia's mom was our Mystery Reader last week and read How the Zebra Got His Stripes.

Happy Thanksgiving!

It's amazing how quickly the month of November has flown by! We had a great time last Tuesday learning about the history of the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving as part of our Social Studies standards on past and present. The kids rotated to each of the second grade classrooms to learn about a different aspect of the Pilgrims' lives and then compared their lives with ours today.

Our "Pilgrims"showing off their Family Turkeys!
The kids were also very excited to begin our first Science unit in November on fossils. We even had our first science experiment where we attempted to remove chocolate chips (fossils) from a cookie (rock). The kids learned how scientists use the scientific method when conducting experiments, and got to use the same process with our chocolate chip experiment.

Kennedy and Olivia are working hard to remove their chocolate chips.

Austin and Moira are also working hard to see how many chocolate chips they can remove from their cookies.

We welcomed Auggie's mom as a November Mystery Reader!

Joseph's grandma was visiting from New York and surprised him by being a Mystery Reader.

We wished Ella a happy birthday on October 7!

Jog For Jefferson School Winners!

The kids were so excited to find out at Friday's Jog For Jefferson assembly that our class raised the most money in the entire school! Wow!!! Because of this, we get to take a class trip to the YMCA later this fall! I also got to put a pie in Mrs. Frentzel's face on Friday! You can check out our Jefferson Family and Friends Facebook page to see a video clip! Again, thank you so much for your generous donations to our wonderful school!

We had lots of other fun things happening this week, too!

Mackenzie and Olivia are playing a game of "Make Ten" to help them memorize some of their addition facts.

The kids loved having the Gahanna Lincoln football quarterback visit our class and read a book!

Auggie and Abigail are enjoying a watermelon treat while sharing their personal narratives with each other. The kids learned that good writers don't write the "whole watermelon," but instead pick out a tiny watermelon seed to focus on.

Kennedy and Corbin share their personal narratives with each other,

Joseph was our very first Star Student last week and we got to learn so much about him!

Math Fun!

We finished our study of odd and even numbers and began working on sequencing and comparing numbers last week. One of the kids' favorite activities that we did was called, "Number Scramble." Each child was given a two-digit or three-digit number and when I said, "Go!" they had to unscramble the numbers by putting them in order from least to greatest. We also began playing a variety of partner games to help us practice math concepts, which the children have really enjoyed!

Having fun with our number scramble!

Moira and Emma are enjoying one of our math games to help them compare numbers.

Happy Sept. 4 birthday to Kennedy and Happy Sept. 6 birthday to Kylie!

Welcome to Our Classroom Blog!

Hi Families!
Welcome to our classroom blog! This is just another wonderful way for you to stay connected to what's happening in our second grade classroom! Each week I post a few pictures of your terrific kiddos engaged in learning to give you a peek inside our classroom. Thanks for stopping by!

During the first week of school, we had fun getting to know our classroom family better by sharing our "Me in a Bag." We learned that Joseph really enjoys playing baseball.

We learned that Mackenzie loves to swim and even won a medal for swim team this summer at Foxboro Pool.

We recently began our first math unit on identifying even and odd numbers. Brianna and Brandon are practicing their even and odd numbers with a game of "Even and Odd Gumballs."

Famous American Wax Museum

The children did AMAZING during our Famous American Wax Museum last Friday! I was so impressed by all that they had learned about their famous Americans! I always tell people that it's one of my most favorite days in second grade. I greatly appreciate all of the help you gave at home, too-- from getting costumes and props to helping prepare note cards. Here are some pictures of all of our famous visitors. Enjoy!
